An investigation is currently underway by the Kampala Police to uncover the circumstances surrounding the reported shooting and subsequent death of the city businessman, Henry Katanga, at his residence in Mbuya Hill, a neighbourhood within Kampala’s Nakawa Division. The incident occurred during the early hours of a Thursday morning, 2nd November 2023.
According to a security source, one of Katanga’s daughters informed the authorities that her 61-year-old father had a dispute with her mother, Molly Katanga, inside their home. Shortly thereafter, a gunshot was heard emanating from the bedroom. Upon rushing to the bedroom, she discovered her father injured and bleeding from his head, while her mother lay unconscious on the floor.
Molly Katanga was swiftly taken to IHK for medical treatment by family members before the arrival of the police. During their investigation, the authorities recovered a pistol with the serial number UG 1622200061 CZ99 COMPACT. Some family members present at the time of the incident were subsequently detained.
High-ranking security officials, including the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen Geoffrey Tumusiime Katsigazi, and the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) commander, SCP Stephen Tanui, hurried to the scene following a distress call made to the OC station Bugolobi, ASP Peter Ogwang. The deceased’s body was transported to the Mulago city mortuary for a postmortem examination, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The couple, Henry and Molly Katanga, are known for being major suppliers of logistical equipment to the Ministry of Defense and Veteran Affairs as well as the UPDF. When questioned about the shooting incident, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango stated that he had yet to receive further information.
